The costs associated to keep status quo is expensive with no long term return. Significant savings in terms of space, property, energy and othercost are possible.
The protection of audio visual heritage and preservation is legally required and implemented in more and more countries. Furthermore, digitization will help to meet the requirements for retaining audio-visual evidence.
The cost of inaction can be huge. Hence, postponing the actions needed increases the costs as costs for spare parts, equipment and labour go up.
PART OF THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF A NATION
According to the UNESCO, almost 200 million hours of audio-visual programmes – a whole chapter of our History – are in immediate danger of disappearing. The adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in October 1980 of the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images marked a historic moment when film, television and sound recordings became officially recognized as part of the national cultural heritage.
The European Commission urges EU Member States to step up their efforts to put online the collections held in all their libraries, archives and museums. It stresses the benefits of making Europe’s culture and knowledge more easily accessible. It also points to the potential economic benefits of digitisation, including through public-private partnerships, for the development of innovative services in sectors like tourism, research and education.
